Located on the fringes of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs at the foothills of the Yarra Valley, Honeywood house sits between suburbia and the semi-rural landscape beyond. Inspired by the clients’ fondness of mid-century modernist forms and affinity for timber, the material palette combines charred timber cladding (Shou Sugi Ban) with robust elements of rammed earth, corten steel and stone—echoing both the clients’ personal connection working with timber and their love for the outdoors and nature. The home is composed of a series of distinct box-like forms stretching along a cranked east-west axis, each responding to its specific function. These volumes are positioned to capture changing views within the site and further to the valley beyond. The central living space is defined by a roofline and ceiling that open upward, offering framed glimpses of the surrounding treetops from within.
